President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) delivered an important message to members of the press in Indonesia at the peak of the 2024 National Press Day (HPN) commemoration in Jakarta, Tuesday.
In his speech, President Jokowi emphasized the importance of the role of the press as a guardian of the pillars of democracy and the encouragement to continue to innovate following the times.
The President emphasized that the press has a big responsibility as a guardian of democracy and must be a place that clears up information for the public.
“I want to leave two messages, first, the press must remain one of the pillars of democracy, the press must be a common home for clearing information,” said President Jokowi.
He also encouraged members of the press to continue producing various journalistic products that are based on facts.
“Report the facts as they are, but not making them up, not making assumptions, not as if they exist,” he added.
The second message conveyed by the President was the importance of the press industry adopting concrete strategic steps in innovation.
By doing this, the President believes that mass media can be more adaptive in facing changing times.
“I really hope that press companies can think about concrete strategic steps, continue to innovate so that they are adaptive in responding to changing times, able to stand tall independently amidst the onslaught of global competition,” he explained.
The peak event for the 2024 HPN commemoration which was held at the Economic Hall Ecopark Ancol, Jakarta, had the theme “Guarding the National Leadership Transition and Maintaining the Integrity of the Nation”.
President Jokowi was also accompanied by a number of high-ranking state officials such as the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Muhadjir Effendy, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and Chairman of the MPR Bambang Soesatyo.
