Unicorns in SS Budi Raharjo’s Notes

TheIKNPost.com — The writing above is “yu-ni-kon” (where the r sound in the ending is not clear). Even though it should be pronunciation-it is “yuu-ni-kawrn”…

“Unicon” is different from Unicorn.

Unicon is a programming language designed by Clint Jeffery with the help of Shamim Mohamed, Jafar al-Gharaibeh, Robert Parlett, etc.

Meanwhile, the “unicorn” is a creature in mythology that resembles a horse and has a single horn in the middle of the crown of its head…

Unicorn is a start-up company that is less than 10 years old, however valuationby investors or the public has exceeded $ 1 billion (or Rp. 14 trillion).

The note is, whose majority shares do Lazada own? Whose majority shares does Tokopedia own? Who owns the majority of shares in OLX?

FYI, the majority of the largest share investments in the eCommerce world in Indonesia were made by foreigners, especially by Mr Jack Ma from the PRC.

Likewise, for various types of paid application services, almost all of the majority of shares are owned by foreigners. It’s true that most web hosting is local, such as: IDWEBHOST, RUMAHWEB, etc… but they also buy cloudspace from abroad, such as from Singapore, US, etc…

Not to mention, if the CMS has been coded then it becomes a web-based online shop, then supported by a mobile application, and… voilà…! Suddenly the online shop company was noticed by foreign investors, then bought, and of course they will definitely bring the profits to their home country, right?

So, the development of Unicorn startups for online business must be monitored carefully, because if something goes wrong, it will suddenly be acquired by foreign investors, and in the end it will be detrimental to Indonesians!

The government is basically a “policy maker”, not an infrastructure contractor.

Did you know that startup companies that have reached Unicorn valuations are all funded and controlled by foreigners… with only one exception being BukaLapak, whose founder still has a larger stake, and policies are still held by local people.

It is normal that startup industry funding is funded by investors, but now what is important is how to ensure that the profits obtained by these investors are not taken out of the country (the investor’s country of origin), or at least the circulation of capital first in Indonesia…

Any other opinions? Let’s have a good discussion, shall we?
