MATRANEWS.ID โ The Constitutional Court (MK) is becoming the center of attention amidst increasingly heated political dynamics. In Case No. 102/PUU-XXI/2023 which is being debated, the request to limit the age of Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates to 70 years is now in the main spotlight, Jakarta, (20/10/23).
If the application is to review article 167 of Law no. 7 of 2017 concerning this General Election was approved, the implications will be very significant.
This ruling will close the door for Prabowo Subianto, who is currently 73 years old, to run for President in the 2024 presidential election.
Of course, this is a development that has received widespread attention in the world of Indonesian politics.
This Friday, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, who is also the Chair of the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and a member of the Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM), gave his firm view on this issue.
Yusril, a legal and political figure with long experience, claims that the issue of determining age in any position is the domain of law formation.
According to Yusril, there is no constitutional problem underlying this issue, because setting an age limit will not conflict with the 1945 Constitution, as long as the individual concerned is considered an adult according to applicable law.
Therefore, Yusril believes that the Constitutional Court must uphold this principle, to avoid making decisions that are controversial and have the potential to trigger problems, considering that the Constitutional Court’s decisions have binding legal force.
When asked whether his views were academic or politically motivated, especially considering that Yusril was part of the Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM), Yusril emphasized that his views were parallel.
This means that he looks at this issue from an academic perspective as well as from a political perspective.
Yusril explained that KIM’s role was to ensure that the constitution and laws were enforced fairly and correctly.
Politics, according to him, must remain on track in accordance with the law and the constitution.
This is in accordance with the approach that has been emphasized by Prabowo Subianto on various occasions.
“The Forward Indonesia Coalition is determined to ensure that the law and constitution are enforced fairly and honestly, so that it is able to bring prosperity to the people and achieve the vision of a Golden Indonesia in 2045,” said Yusril with confidence.
Yusril Ihza Mahendra’s statement has become one of the focal points in the debate regarding age restrictions for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, and has increasingly heated up the political atmosphere ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
The Constitutional Court’s final decision in Case No. 102/PUU-XXI/2023 will determine the future direction of Indonesian politics, and stakeholders and the public will likely be waiting closely for the results of this case.
