The strong earthquake that occurred at 7.58 am Taiwan time occurred when residents were preparing to go to school and work.
The recorded depth of the earthquake reached 15.5 km according to the Taiwan Weather Agency report.
The earthquake vibrations, which were felt as far away as Japan, the Philippines and China, triggered a small tsunami wave that reached parts of the southern prefecture of Okinawa, Japan.
Naha Airport Authority in Okinawa temporarily closed flights.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said the risk of damaging tsunami waves had passed.
The Taipei city government said they had not received any reports of major damage in the capital Taipei.
Taipei’s MRT has resumed operations following the shaking, while power operator Taipower said more than 87,000 homes in Taiwan lost power as a result of the quake.
Taiwan’s high-speed rail operators said no damage or casualties had been reported on their trains, but confirmed trains would experience delays.
