BUENOS AIRES : Lionel Scaloni confirmed he will stay as coach of the Argentina national team, Reuters reported.
The future of the coach who led Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup has been in question in the last 2 months.
Scaloni, 45, made a surprise statement that he was considering resigning after Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in 2026 World Cup qualifying in November last year.
At that time he said: “It’s hard to survive and it’s hard to keep winning.”
Argentine media reported earlier this month that Scaloni reached an agreement with the Argentine Football Association to remain in charge of the Tango team at least until the end of this summer’s Copa America.
“There was a lot of talk, but I always told the truth. There were moments to think and know what to do. This is not a farewell or anything,” said the former coach of the Argentina U-20 national team in an interview with Italian television.
“I think about how the national team continues its journey and also the time to give space to young players, and this is important for us. This is a moment of reflection.”
Scaloni became Argentina coach in 2018. He guided Argentina to the Copa America title in 2021 – their first major trophy since the 1986 World Cup and took their third World Cup crown in Qatar the following year.
