BALI: Two foreign tourists including an Australian woman died on the resort island of Bali, after heavy rain triggered a landslide that swept away their villa, an official said on Thursday (14 March).
The wooden villa in Jatiluwih village on the popular tourist island was hit by a landslide on Thursday morning after heavy rain in the area the previous night, local disaster mitigation agency official I Nyoman Srinadha Giri told media.
Heavy rain eroded a water channel used for irrigation that runs above the villa and triggered a landslide, killing the two, according to the official.
“The victim was evacuated from the rubble in a sleeping (position). “There were two victims, a man and a woman in one bed,” he said.
The female victim, Angelina Smith, 47 years old, born in Australia and has permanent residency in the United States, while the nationality and identity of the male victim are not yet known.
The victim’s body was taken to a hospital in the provincial capital, Denpasar.

He added that Angelina and her male friend were allegedly asleep in their room when the landslide hit their villa.
Landslides in some places were exacerbated by deforestation, and prolonged heavy rains caused flooding in some areas.
