‘Israel targets our workers systematically,’ says World Central Kitchen founder

WASHINGTON: Celebrity chef Jose Andres told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday that the Israeli strikes that killed seven of his food aid workers in Gaza had targeted them “systematically, car by car”.

Speaking in a video interview, Andres said the World Central Kitchen (WCK) charity group he founded had clear communications with the Israeli army, which he said was aware of the movements of its aid workers.

This wasn’t “an unlucky situation where, ‘oops,’ we dropped the bomb in the wrong place,” Andres said. “Even if we do not coordinate with the (Israel Defense Forces), no democratic country and army can target civilians and humanity.”

The aid workers were killed when their convoy was hit shortly after they had supervised the unloading of 100 tonnes of food brought to Gaza by sea. The Israeli military expressed “deep sorrow” over the incident and Prime Minister Netanyahu called it accidental.

Andres said he was supposed to be in Gaza with his team but for different reasons “couldn’t go back to Gaza”.

‘NOT GOOD ENOUGH’

Meanwhile in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Thursday (4 April) that Israel’s explanation for the aid worker’s death was ‘not good enough’.
