In connection with the widespread news regarding the internship program in Germany, Ferienjob, and its connection with a number of universities including the Indonesian Catholic University Atma Jaya Jakarta (UAJ).
With this, the UAJ rectorate said that as many as 27 students who took part in the program had returned safe and healthy without any deficiencies and had stopped the program since February 2024.
“We have carried out an internal investigation and in-depth evaluation of the development of the German Ferienjob program and confirmed that this program was immediately stopped from the beginning of the year once all our students returned well, and that is the most important thing,” said the University Secretary, Dr.rer. Nat. Agustina Dwi Retno Nurcahyanti, in Jakarta, Wednesday (27/3).
The Ferienjob program starts in 2023 and sends 27 students from various faculties at UAJ.
There are 27 students starting to run the program from October 1 2023 to December 31 2023. Evaluation will also be carried out immediately in January 2024, with the result of immediately terminating the program.
Agustin explained that as a result of coordination with the Atma Jaya International Office, the internship program was terminated because it did not provide maximum benefits to the teaching and learning process for students.
Furthermore, the university has given a circular to internally regarding the termination of the program and caution in the internship program.
However, the university will continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Education and Culture, especially LLDIKTI III regarding next steps so that this does not happen again in the future.
Coordination with fellow universities will also continue as an effort to maintain the quality of national education.
Agustin further explained that the results of the evaluation with the International Office Atma Jaya showed that there were a number of things that needed significant improvement considering the occurrence mismanagement in the job placement process.
Among other things, starting from the process of sending students, financial issues in the form of deductions for accommodation costs, tax refunds, as well as job protection and health insurance.
“The return of all Atma Jaya students to Indonesia, apart from the end of their internship contract period, is also inseparable from the efforts of the university to provide provision to students from the start.”
“Starting from the selection process according to the criteria for the objectives of the internship program, administrative consultation and coordination with related parties, as well as communicating with the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Higher Education Institute. “We are grateful that all students were able to go home well,” said Agustin.
Agustin then stated that overall the university has various international collaborations, not only with Germany but also with other developed countries in the Asian region such as South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, as well as in Europe including the Netherlands and France.
Another evaluation result that needs to be addressed internally is that this experience is also an important lesson for universities to always be vigilant and careful while tightening up every proposal or input related to internship programs both abroad and domestically.
“To address undesirable matters related to the development of this case, if necessary, the university itself will prepare comprehensive legal steps as an effort to maintain its good name and ensure a conducive teaching and learning process on campus permanently,” said Agustin.
